The order of St Elmo (second class) is a simple compass rose i red and white with a medallion depicting a golden Argos ship against blue enamel. The mast is exchanged with a torch. The order of St Elmo (first class) is a double compass rose with a breast star depicting a portrait of the saint. Saint Elmo is the patron saint of seafarers amongst other things.

The order is awarded for extraordinary accomplishments in seafaring (or within trade or exploring) or accomplishments for the education system. The ship and the torch symbolize every human’s potential to navigate oneself, or to guide others, through the dangerous waters of ignorance.
